How Does Plagiarism Check Work at IEU?

📑 How Does Plagiarism Check Work at IEU?

🔎 General Principles of the Check

  • All written works by students and staff are checked through the StrikePlagiarism system, which scans Internet and library databases.
  • A work is considered original if it contains no plagiarism or improper borrowing without references.
  • The number of checks is limited to 3 attempts. After the third failed attempt, the case is referred to the Ethics Committee.
  • In exceptional cases (technical error, force majeure, author’s written request), an additional check is possible with administrative approval.

📘 How Are Term Papers and Theses Checked?

  1. 30 days before the defense (no later than 7 working days before), the department sends the electronic versions to the StrikePlagiarism administrator.
  2. The administrator uploads the papers into the system within 48 working hours.
  3. The first check is free of charge. Subsequent checks must be paid by the author.
  4. The system generates a similarity report — forwarded to the academic supervisor for analysis.
  5. If the similarity is within acceptable limits, the paper is considered verified.
  6. If issues are found (missing references, excessive quoting), the paper is returned for revision.
  7. The full report (PDF) can be obtained from the department upon request.
  8. In case of disagreement, the author has the right to appeal within 3 working days.

📙 How Are Dissertations Checked?

  1. The student submits the dissertation to the supervisor for preliminary review.
  2. The supervisor forwards the document to the StrikePlagiarism administrator.
  3. The administrator uploads the file into the system.
  4. The check may be free or paid — as decided by the Vice-Rector.
  5. The report is reviewed by a specialized academic council. The decision is recorded in the protocol.
  6. If everything is in order, the work is approved for defense.
  7. If violations are found, the paper is returned for revision (noted in the protocol).
  8. Intentional plagiarism or attempt to conceal borrowed content — the work is not approved for defense, and disciplinary action is taken.
  9. Appeals are handled according to the official procedure for awarding academic degrees.

📗 How Are Research and Teaching Materials Checked?

  1. The department head or division leader initiates the check for monographs, articles, abstracts, textbooks, etc.
  2. The administrator performs the check within the agreed timeframe (up to 5 working days).
  3. The results are discussed at a department meeting. If everything is fine — a request for publication is submitted.
  4. In case of minor issues — the work is returned for revision.
  5. If plagiarism is detected — the paper is returned with an official warning.
  6. If plagiarism is detected again — the material is not accepted, and the case is referred to the Ethics Committee.
  7. The author has the right to appeal within 3 working days.
